But I would give the counterpart and honest side of that statement. We all got the point and maybe all the people that reads this blog have spent 3x than that. Wow, I didn’t realize I had spent so much already, and not a single CD or EP released yet!!! Reply I bought all the plugins for half the price as well, which would have cost a lot more.

I’m thinking my setup is probably worth around $6,500 if I paid original price for everything.

Pro Tools 11 upgrade from PT Express: $200ĭell XPS 420 desktop: $45 (got computer for free, replaced video card) Hey Graham, here’s my studio gear, not counting the few instruments I have: You put those things in the right relationship, emphasize the priorities. I’m happy to see how you focus on the basic and most important things, without denying the effects/benefits extra stuff (gear, plugins.) can have. I’m excited to see you, Graham, manage the challenge and I probably will try the same the next days/weeks. ) and did not buy all at the same time, but waited for a good discount to buy ONE of them and then LEARN to use it before buying a new one. I made a list of plugins I thought I “need” (saturation, multi band compression, reverb, bus compression. Work with them, compare them to the stock plugins, try which work best for vocals, drums, guitars. Today, I’m quite happy to have some more plugins and tools at hand since they allow me to make those subtle changes I was longing for.įor plugins, I strongly recommend to start with ONE bundle (in my case the Renaissance-Bundle from waves) and work your way through the plugins until you KNOW them. However, I’m happy I started with a “small” setup and learned to work with the stock plugins a few years. Those tools allowed me to take my mixes even further. Since this time I brought a few more well selected plugins like the C4, 元, a good reverb, a nice saturation plugin and the SSL-Bundle.

I stated to use and learn it, and it DID improve my recordings, but the changes were subtle. After a few years I invested in ONE waves bundle I already “knew” from the guy I learned from. This made many recordings sound much better.

Today I own a bigger interface and more microphones, so I can track a full drum set. However, it does not sound the same and for some kinds of music you “need” a multitrack drum-recording. Yes, you can get a nice drum sound with one microphone, especially a large and good one like I onw. It all worked out fine, except for drums. I have done quite a lot with only “one” microphone.

I probably would have brought a Rodes NT1 oder NT2 as first microphone but the “special price” for the AT4045 was too good to resist. I started with Pro Tools because my church and friends used ProTools and therefore it was best for me to work with this DAW since I had session compatibility with mx church (where I did some drums recording) and good support from friends. My initial Setup was an MBox2 with ProTools (about $500), an AT4045 which I got from a friend for half the price ($400), quite cheap ESI nEAR 05 monitors ($300 in total) a pop filter and a few cables, which results at about $1200.
